Monkey shoulder whiskey near 809058/15/2023 ![]() Monkey Shoulder 40% ABV, e150a, chillfiltered, NAS, Batch #27 Monkey Shoulder is a blended malt consisting of Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Kininvie. This is the first time tasting this malt. Hello Scotchit! Today I't's time for the Monkey Shoulder community review. It's definitely something I'll consider buying, as it is very easy to drink, and it's good to share with a novice alcoholic scotch drinker. ![]() ![]() Not very long finish, but it carries no alcohol burn whatsoever, and it is very damn smooth! Mild and smooth, sweet apple, unripe plums, lingering in the mouth. Glenfiddich 12 definitely shines through. Honey, berries, boiled fruit, light sherry, juicy pears, mellow vanilla and a wee bit of orangy citrus. I ordered this for my friend, as he's not really that much into scotch, and we swapped drinks halfway through. This time around, I'm reviewing Monkey Shoulder. Welcome to my sixth review, and the last in my series of friday-night-at-the-bar. Truthfully, I'm on an alcohol hiatus right now to give my liver a chance to recover. I bought a mini of Monkey Shoulder but have not yet opened it. In the whisky world this injury is referred to as Monkey Shoulder. This will a) build massive muscles and b) create a repetitive stress injury. However, the large bulk of malt is created by malting companies that turn it with modern machines.Īnyhow, imaging taking a shovel and spending 8 hours a day turning dirt for years on end. Balvenie still does it that way because they are Balvenie (actually, they only produce 10% of what they use and buy the rest). The solution to this is to constantly turn the barley thereby preventing the sprouts from having a chance to strongly grip each other.īack in the day this turning was done by people. Those sprouts will intertwine with each other making a single huge useless glob. I just got back from Scotland and would like to chime in with why it's called Monkey Shoulder.Īs the barley is malting it begins to sprout. At $25 that I got it, Monkey Shoulder is an amazing value and complex enough to enjoy as an everyday substitute to a beginner single malt. I would venture to state that it is on par with some young single malts such as Glenfiddich 12 yr or Glenlivet 12 with it's spiciness. Yet at the same time, it is definitely better than other blends like CR 12 or JW Black. Since then, I have noticed it is definitely less complex and no where near as good. ![]() Overall: When I first tried it, I instantly thought of the Balvenie Doublewood 12 yr I had tried at the bar. finish: malty oak, sweetness like honey, short finish strong alcohol burn that lingers.taste: spice that reminds me of the DW 12, but not as complex.sweet fruit like Glenfiddich 15, but less refined as the alcohol smell dominates more. nose: honey, malt, something I couldn't pinpoint, but realized it was almost like ripe bananas. He told me it was a mix of two of my favorite scotch Balvenie and Glenfiddich (along with Kinninvie). That was until I was in a bar in Richmond, VA and over a glass of Balvenie DW 12 the bartender mentioned it. I had heard about Monkey Shoulder for a little while, but never paid it attention.
